As I sit on the balcony of my home-away-from-home for Mothers Day Weekend I can hear the sweet laughter of my daughter (who is splashing in the pool) and feel the gentle nudges of my son (who is swiftly kicking me from the inside). I notice that the noises of the other children that seem to flood the chlorinated water don't phase me. It is in this moment that I realize how keen my ears are to the noises of my child. Whether it be a laugh, a squeal of excitement or a cry - my ears are tuned into the frequency of her voice.
I believe that this is how our Father in heaven feels, and how He operates. While He hears the cry of everyone (just as our ears can hear the many noises of people passing by) I believe that the specific cry of His children evokes a response within Him. Whether that response is a gentle smile when he hears the joy in his children's tone, a chuckle when He feels the roar of our laughter or whether our desperation and pain prompts Him to move heaven to come to our aide - He knows the cry of His children. Now don't count me out and call me intolerant- as its biblically clear that the cry of the "unsaved" erupts a party in heaven (when they call on the name of the Lord to be saved see Luke 15:10). What I feel impressed on me today to share is the intense need to respond as a parent to the voice, cry and request of their child.
"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not." -1 John 3:1 KJV
let's try this version as I think it paints a nice picture -
"See what [an incredible] quality of love the Father has given (shown, bestowed on) us, that we should [be permitted to] be names and called and counted children of God! and so we are! The reason that the world does not know (recognize, acknowledge) us is that it does not know (recognize, acknowledge) Him." -1 John 3:1 AMP
I love that the amplified version of the above scripture emphasizes the privilege to be called a child of God, stating that this is something we are permitted to enjoy. We know that the sacrifice of Jesus was the key that unlocked the door to salvation for us. For many years strict procedures and tight laced rules tried to mold us into a people who could attain God's grace, but we could never measure up. This is why we needed the perfect blood sacrifice of Jesus. And this blood is the covering that we take on when we ask Christ into our life - not just for the benefits that salvation has to offer, but because we know that without him we are broke, busted and disgusted. I love that we can know our flaws, accept Christ and feel confident that he wont leave us the way we came. He will renew, rebirth, recreate and reform us into the Children of God that he intended for us to be.
Just as a radio needs a frequency to be broadcast on, it needs ears to hear it's message and a station dial tuned into it's channel. So our spiritual life is one in the same. While God is always speaking to His children, not all of His children are tuned into the spirit to hear him. I do believe this goes for us as well, when we pray to our Father. The scripture tells us that at times we don't receive the things we pray for because we "ask amiss" (see James 4:3). This tells me that we could totally be wasting our breath, asking God to do things contrary to His character, His Word and His will.
Well - How do I know what God's character, Will and Word are? Thats great question, I am glad you asked! You spend time with Him. You read his word, and you tune yourself into the frequency of heaven as you sit before His feet asking for him to change you, mold you and speak to you. When your heart is pure before the Lord and you aim only to seek His face in pure meekness, I believe that we will hear His voice, and the noise of our cry will move heaven.
All the way back in Genesis we can read that the very words spoken from God created movement, action and life. His words move heaven and Earth. When we speak to God as His children, He listens and He answers.
"And this is the confidence (the assurance, the privilege of boldness) which I have in Him: [we are sure] that if we ask anything (make any request) according to His will (in agreement with His own plan), He listens to and hears us. And if (since) we [positively] know that he listens to us in whatever we ask, we also know [with settled and absolute knowledge] that we have granted us as our present possessions] the requests made of Him." -1 John 5:14-15 AMP
So let this be our goal today, and every day - to have a voice that reaches the ears of God, and evokes a response because He recognizes that voice as the voice of His child.
You may be asking yourself today - Does God know my voice? Of course he does, but does He recognize your voice as the voice of His child? Do you spend time before Him seeking His will and His way for your life? Does he know that when He speaks to you, you will listen?
Dear Jesus - Thank you for your word that instructs us in all of our ways. Thank you that you've given us this BIBLE as Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, and that we can glean from the stories of faith, courage and wisdom within it's many chapters. Lord we ask you today to form us into the Children that you desire. Help us to be women and men after your own heart and allow our ears to be fine tuned to the frequency of heaven. Let our words reach your ears and evoke a response from you, knowing that you hold the world in your hands. And let our hearts always listen to the gentle nudge, soft whisper and direct instruction of your voice. -Amen.
