Just an Illusion

The enemy is the father of lies, his plans and tricks are simply illusions when compared to the power of God. What illusion is he showing you today?

“Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.”   ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5:8‬ ‭AMPC‬‬

Notice here that the scripture tells us that the enemy walks around "like a lion". In fact in the good 'ol King James Version the words read "as a roaring lion". I don't know about you but this paints a picture for me of a certain enemy wishing he was a lion, trying to look and sound like a lion, but failing to embody a lion. We know that as followers of Christ our Jesus is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Lion laying with the Lamb, etc. This "roaring lion" in 1 Peter is simply an illusion.

My daughter will be three in October and she is suddenly skiddish about nearly everything. Any unfamiliar noice or movement makes her uneasy. I have found myself daily telling her that there is no need to be scared and that Jesus is with her.  Sleeping through the night is a new challenge in our home. Our previously good sleeping toddler has suddenly reverted back to separation-anxiety and I find myself in her room all hours of the night. The other night when I inquired about her consistent waking she told me about the shadows that she sees in her room. She pointed them out and revealed that they scare her when I am not with her.

I explained to my daughter that these shadows may look unsightly, but they are not to be feared. We made shadows on the wall using our hands and I did my best to convey that fear had no place in her mind or in our home. As I was searching my brain in regards to explaining a shadow to a 2.5 year old I felt the Lord quicken within me and impress upon me that this is what the enemy does is our life.

He takes something in our life, manages to shift focus from the light (or good) to the dark (or bad) and he distorts what we see. Seemingly innocent balerena figurines appear to be grotesque shapes scattered along the wall. You see my friend, it is only an illusion. Once we turn the light on, the lies of the darkness must flee.

When we focus on the distorted illusions of life's many situations we can feel hopeless and defeated. But when we illuminate our situations with the word of God suddenly the lies and the picture that the enemy tried to paint no longer can stand.

I also noticed that these shadows are sometimes present when she drifts off to sleep,  but the kicker is that I am with her on these occasions. She is able to rest in my arms knowing that no matter what may arise, I will keep her safe. Now this my friends, is exactly how we should feel about our Heavenly Father. When we give him problems and we lay at his feet, we should rest assured that he will handle and solve our biggest worries.

The word tells us not to give any place to the devil. And it also tells us over 350 times not to fear. I believe that when we look at the shadows, focus on the illusions, and refuse to give our problems to god and "go to sleep" then we are giving place to the devil, and fear will arise. And where fear is, perfect love isint. Because when we understand his perfect love for us, there is no room and no need to fear. Because we know He has our best interest in mind every step of the way.

Lord Jesus, thank you for your beautiful child reading this message. I pray that you would open their eyes to see the illusions that the enemy has painted for them. I pray that your people would rise up realizing that we have nothing to fear. I pray we would recall "the back of the book" and remind ourselves that We Win. I thank you that you've already won the battle, and we are victorious through you. Lord lead us into green pastures, and reveal to us the lurking enemy. Help us to be steadfast, sober and vigilant, that we your people can life in true freedom.     -Amen

PS- Don't forget to Shake off the Shackles, it's difficult to dance before the lord when you are bound.
